Welcome to Northwater Quilts
Hi, I'm Coleen Merte, quilter, pattern designer, and quilting instructor. My patterns generally combine piecing with wool applique.
Many begin with an antique quilt block which has been altered to lend itself to looking either antique or contemporary, depending on the fabric and color choices of the quiltmaker.
I live in Clarkston, Michigan with my husband Ron. We have three children and I work full time as a registered nurse. I have a bachelor's degree in education and have taught numerous classes on all aspects of quilting. I especially love to teach beginners, infecting them with my enthusiasm for the art. My other interests include acting on stage in community theatre, reading, and baseball.
Workshops, lectures & trunk shows
In my lectures I will display my quilts while sharing my quilting tips, inspiration behind my designs as well as ideas on how you might create your own designs.
My workshops will show you various processes for preparing and stitching cotton and wool appliques that will guarantee smooth edges and precise points.
I am looking forward to meeting you in one of my classes, lectures or workshops.
"LeMoyne Summer" is my tribute to American small-towns everywhere as they celebrate the 4th of July with local parades and fireworks. I grew up in a small town and marched in our school band every year wearing a wool band uniform! So I thought it fitting to make the buntings in the quilt border from wool. Hopefully the quilt will inspire a sense of patriotism and nostalgia for you, too.
